This quote from Pilgrim’s Progress talks about a literal burden - most likely a bag or backpack of some sort - falling off of Christian’s back. As soon as he comes to the cross, the burden is released and he is saved. Interestingly, this quote comes from the third stage, which falls fairly early into the book. When the book begins, we expect the story to be about Christian’s journey to remove his burden. In contrast, this is not the case at all. The story truly begins to develop after Christian is saved. After he loses his burden at the cross, the story focuses on Christian’s relationships, his failures, and his victories.

At the start of Christian’s journey, he encounters a man by the name of Evangelist. When we first meet Evangelist,

”The thoughts of these things make me want to cry.” Evangelist studied the man. “If this is your condition, why are you standing here still?”” (Pilgrim’s Progress - John Bunyan) Nearly every other pilgrim or used-to-be pilgrim Christian meets is absolutely atrocious. Faithful is one of the few exceptions! The two men are constantly helping each other grow closer to Christ. When I read about their friendship, I thought of the verse Proverbs 27:17. It says: “Iron sharpens Iron, just as one person sharpens another.” Hopeful is Christian’s last companion. In the midst of the Vanity Fair chaos, Hopeful sees the goodness of Christian’s heart. Christian is left with a decision. For a while he seriously contemplated returning home and abandoning his pilgrimage! In addition, he tried to get rid of the burden by himself many times, even though he knew only God could remove it. On the mountain, Christian fell asleep, leaving his scroll at the resting place. It was only by the grace of God that he found it again. To repeat, yes, Christian did fail many times. However, he kept his eyes on the Lord, and therefore also achieved many great

Nonetheless, when we do look first to the Lord and we make wise decisions, we will be victorious! When Christian met Apollyon, the demon tried to get in his head and place doubt in his heart. Apollyon listed off many of Christian’s shortcomings, and Christian’s response was perfect. “Apollyon jabbed his pointed finger in Christian’s direction. “You have already been unfaithful in your service to Him, so how is it that you think you are going to receive wages for Him?” Christian glanced at the ground. “All this is true, in fact there is much more that you left out.” He looked back at Apollyon. “But the prince whom I serve and honor is merciful and ready to forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”” To conclude, John Bunyan’s character, Christian, is not perfect. None of the Characters - except for God - are! Everyone is able to relate to Christian in a way, and that is why this book is so popular. This book was written in 1678 A.D. and we still read it today. The story of Christian’s faith journey is a very real and inspiring portrayal of how to walk with the Lord. Christian’s positive and negative relationships, his failures, and his victories, were written to show us what it is like to follow Christ how we should. There is absolutely no doubt that this book does a wonderful job of displaying
