In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, a message shown throughout the whole novel is that one should look at the world from another's perspective. One example of this lesson is a quote that is said in chapter twenty. During the recess of the trial, Scout, Jem and Dill wander over to a tree owned by Dolphus Raymond. He offers them a sip of his drink in a paper bag, presumed to be alcohol. However, when dill tastes it he discovers that it is only coca-cola. When questioned about why he does this by Scout, Dolphus Raymond replies,“...When I come to town, which is seldom if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond’s in the clutches of whiskey—that’s why he won’t change his ways. Dubose dies. Before this scene, Scout and Jem were mean to Mrs. Dubose and vandalised her snow-on-mountain flowers. To repay Mrs. Dubose, they had to go and read to her every day for a month. One month later Jem and Scout had repaid their debts, Atticus got a phone call and announced that he was going to Mrs. Dubose’s house. He returned after Scout’s bedtime. He then tells Jem that Mrs. Dubose has died. Atticus then says, “‘She’s [Mrs. Dubose] not suffering anymore. She was sick for a long time. Son, didn’t you know what her fits were?’ Jem shook his head. ‘Mrs. Dubose was a morphine addict...She’d have spent the rest of her life on it and died without so much agony.’” This quote shows the idea that you should look at the world through other's perspective because Jem never did so to Mrs. Dubose. Jem always considered Mrs. Dubose to be mean, but he never considered why. However, when Atticus reveals that Mrs. Dubose was addicted to morphine, Jem realizes that there is a reason for Mrs. Dubose’s cruelty. In these two ways, I believe that one To Kill A Mockingbird’s morals is to look at people through their eyes before judging
