Every year rabies kills approximately 59,000 people, that would be like everyone in alpena dying three times. You may be surprised that this is a real problem because there are vaccines for rabies. The problem is that people in poor areas of the world don’t have access to these vaccines or treatment. Rabies can be very deadly if you don’t get treatment after being bitten by a wild animal, and sometimes even a domesticated animal. It also can have some very dreadful symptoms. First of all if you do not know what rabies is, it is a virus that is contracted when an animal with rabies bites a human or another animal and the saliva is transferred from the infected to the uninfected. One of the few organizations dedicated to ending rabies is endrabiesnow.org. Their goal is to end rabies deaths by the year 2030. They plan on doing this by vaccinating the majority of dogs in areas that have difficulty with rabies. When the better part of the dog population is vaccinated they will have herd immunity, causing the rabies virus to eventually faze out. This strategy has in several countries in the Americas, where rabies is old news. It is interesting how there are millions of dollars donated to research for other health problems such as cancer which nobody knows if it is even curable. I’m not saying that cancer isn’t an issue, and I’m definitely not saying we should institute socialism on organizations for curing diseases by taking money from more supported issues and give it to others.
