In the last two hundred years the ideologies of race, class and gender have changed immensely. The times have changed in the past and will continue to change as we move into the future. Cloud Atlas is a novel written by David Mitchell that was turned into a film in 2014. The film takes you from colonial times to the far-far future showing in each time period how the aspects of race, class and gender are significant. Whether it be on the conflict of hegemony and keeping the lower class happy or, the way women are viewed in the future as not equal, and not even considered “Human”. Cloud Atlas takes you on journey through the different time periods to show how race, gender and class are all relevant throughout the ages of time.
Race: a category of humankind that shares certain distinctive physical traits(Webster) . Less than a short two decades ago the African American race was enslaved by the whites. To their understanding Blacks were made to work for them and were not even considered human to some. In the last two hundred years mankind has come a far way. Luisa goes to interview Lloyd Hooks on the safety of a nuclear reactor that his company has built. Many of the locals are worried for their safety and are protesting the nuclear power plant; this being the reason Luisa is going to interview Hooks. Luisa is somewhat looked down upon throughout the scenes by Hooks and his associates. Hooks is often seen giving Luisa condescending looks and speaking to her as if she wasn’t very intelligent.
