Race played a huge role in the quality of housing conditions. Typically poor African Americans were placed in the project housing units, received poor maintenance in the buildings, and had limited safety in the neighborhoods. Public housing was located in urban areas. It was harder for African American to own and buy homes. There were many drug test, background, and credit checks done in order to receive housing. The negative effects are that it encouraged segregation within races, families broken apart because men could not be present in the home, and risk being denied housing from any positive drug test.
