Racial intolerance was viewed throughout this whole story by the most important characters such as, Lily, Rosaleen, and the Boatwright’s. Furthermore, race did not affect Lily’s perspective on others. Lily accepted all beliefs of all different skin colors. Likewise, Lily realizes the truth about the hesitation of undertaking contrasting beliefs and the absurd amount of thoughts on racism. Kidd showed the importance of how skin color should not matter when expressing the value of a human. Internal relationships should not show prejudice between each other. Rosaleen was affected by the ethnic discrimination of others which was not right. “Well, look what we got coming here,” he called out. “Where’re you going ni****?” (Kidd 31). This shows how people hated Rosaleen for being black while she was just trying to get her own gas with Lily. Rosaleen was now affected by others while she was just trying to live her life. Each color should be treated equally. Just because somebody is dissimilar does not mean they are different. June Boatwright, one of the main characters, shows her racial intolerance by expressing her words about Lily being white and not having the same skin color as June. “But she’s white, August” (Kidd 87). This shows how Lily got racial intolerance because she was white while just trying to live in an all-black family. However, this makes Lily extremely mad and upset because you should be able to express your own skin color. Since Lily was white and the Boatwright’s and Rosaleen were black they had many complications. “Indicating that no African American can be a guardian for a Caucasian child” (“The Secret Life of Bees” 236). The police said that you must not have mixed races together in a house which is racist. This should not be a big deal who lives in a house or not.
