Racism And Prejudice In Our Society Analysis

An article that I found this week was really shocking and it dealt with a lot of racism and prejudice that is still found in our society to this day. The story revolves around an autistic Black 15-year-old track and cross country runner, Chase Coleman, who got lost during one of the runs and ended up wandering onto the middle of a nearby road. A middle aged White male, Martin MacDonald, then proceeded to assault Chase because as he later stated to the police he was only attempting to protect himself and his wife, the passenger in the car that they were in, from being mugged. That statement in itself can be found very racist and also degrading to Black people as he essentially assumed that since he had previously had an incident with Black teens that all Black teens were muggers or vandals. Which also seems much like the defense most people give boys for “being boys”; in a video we watched people were discussing that men are prone to violence and easily brought to fit of rage because supposedly that’s just the way their wired. MacDonald is probably racist because his Family was not a strong Agent of Socialization when it came to discussing race and how that makes people different from each other, but how we are also all the same and deserve to be treated fairly, regardless of the color of our skin. Also because of MacDonald’s previous incident with Black youths, he will probably always hold a negative prejudice towards Black people regardless of if they have mental or physical handicaps as we can see from this tragic incident that Chase Coleman had to experience. What is even sadder is that Chase Coleman’s mother tried to press charges against Martin MacDonald because of the fact that he
