The movie Jasper Jones illustrates a key theme of racism, and it is highly visible in the Community hall scene when Mrs Finlay spills tea on Mrs Lu. Mrs Finlay did not take in consideration that the Lu’s became victims of the war and started attacking Mrs Lu with her derogatory words “Is your boy alright cause mine’s not” as her son was fighting in the war for the Vietnamese. By doing so, Mrs Finlay’s dialogue informs the audience that Mrs Finlay believes that Mrs Lu can’t understand English as she is speaking in a slow manner as well as mocking her because of her race. Furthermore, it also displays the community’s views on the Vietnamese during the Vietnam War is horrendous, as the Lu family is being targeted over something they have no control
