Sports impact today’s society in a great way. Much of the societal changes taken place are impacted by famous sports figures or sports teams. Adrian Peterson changed the public view of a whooping when he was allegedly suspended for child abuse or how Ray Rice punching his wife inside an elevator during an altercation impacted domestic violence against women. Children look up to these popular icons and model their lifestyles after those they see on TV. Whether positive or negative, sports teams and athletes make a big difference in societal norms. One instance of sports helping create change in the society occurred back during the spring months of this year on the University of Oklahoma’s campus. However, without the slipped exposure of this video would the general public have known that this was occurring not only on the University of Oklahoma’s campus, but across the nation as well? This video indicated that yes, in fact racism is still alive on some of the most prominent campuses and yes the issue should be dealt with rightfully. The football team there at the University of Oklahoma stood in place of the millions across the country who oppose the concept of racism. Their protest signified a cry for change and a cry for reasonable yet equal acceptance amongst all ethnicities. Shortly after the video was released to the students across campus, the football team immediately responded. With a diverse population they wanted to employ a message that would let the general public know that racism should not be tolerated at any costs.
