In the novel, The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd alludes to the 1963 Birmingham bombing to display the extreme racism in society. Kidd includes a note that Lily finds in the wailing wall, “I looked in the direction of the wall, invisible now in the darkness. Birmingham, Sept 15, four little angels dead” (98).
