In the novel, The Secret Life of Bees, Sue Monk Kidd alludes to the 1963 Birmingham bombing to display the extreme racism in society. Kidd includes a note that Lily finds in the wailing wall, “I looked in the direction of the wall, invisible now in the darkness. Birmingham, Sept 15, four little angels dead” (98). The note is referring a bombing in Birmingham, Alabama on a Baptist church. In fact, four Ku Klux Klan members committed the crime and the known motive was racism. Four little girls were killed, which is referenced in the note, “four little angels dead.” Racism was an enormous problem, considering people formed groups, like the Ku Klux Klan, to hurt and intimidate African Americans.
