When the word “diversity” is mentioned it is usually associated to ethnic or cultural background, but it is actually so much more. Diversity simply means “differences”. Radiologic Sciences, like many of the different professions in healthcare, requires a level of diversity, or differences, in the professionals working in this field. Healthcare is a constantly evolving field of work, with many challenges that vary from patient to patient, and situation to situation. A diverse group of professionals are needed to meet the needs of these patients. Almost everyone in today’s society has had or at some point will have an xray. For example, a very close friend of mine has a younger sister named Alli with cerebral palsy. As I grew up around her family I learned how to interact with her and how to make her laugh. This experience has been a huge help to me whenever I have needed to x-ray a child with not only cerebral palsy, but also with other mental limitations. I actually got the opportunity to x-ray Alli in one of my clinical rotations recently. I knew exactly how to interact with her to keep her at ease and overall her procedure went extremely well. Although I have had ideal experiences with those types of patients and have been predominantly succesful, there have been other times when I wasn’t quite as successful. I haven’t had much experience with geriatric patients, and as a result, I have struggled at times to meet their needs and to keep them as comfortable as possible. A classmate of mine, however, has actually worked in geriatrics before and it is almost magical how quickly she seems to put them at ease.
