Today was the day Dill and I were going to peek at the Radley house. I figured we ought’a wait until this very eve because it was the last night before school, meaning if we were killed, we ain’t gonna miss any vacation. But more importantly I suppose we waited till this night because father would be buried deep in reading. And I’m definitely not looking for trouble with Atticus, and I can only imagine his disappointment if he found out we were disobeying his word and snooping out the Radley affairs. But, we’re dying with curiosity. The plan was for Dill, Scout, and me to leave home under the guise of celebrating the last night of summer at Rachel’s fishpool down the street. Atticus would let us leave, blind to our intentions. Dill and I had planned to leave Scout and go to the Radley’s house alone, but she held on to us and our trio set out to the Radley’s. We sneaked over to the back of the house through a rickety fence. I stood on Dill’s shoulders at first, attempting to peer through a curtain, but my sight was too obscured, so I attempted to climb up their porch and see through that window. Stepping up the porch stairs was a strain on my heart. With each creak the stairs made I feared for my life further. An imposing figure’s shadow was cast directly next to me. A straw hat on an unfamiliar person had cursed horror through my veins. It looked like he held arms as well. I lifted my hands above my head, sweat racing down my face, and made a run for my life. I sprinted away from the porch and out where we had come.
