Merton was born in 1915 and lived until 1968. He became a Catholic monk in Kentucky of an Abby of Our Lady of Gethsemani near Bardstown. He became a amazing writer during his time leading to the published books in poetry, essays, religious meditations, plays novels, and he even wrote his own autobiography. It was mentioned that many different people liked his writing. When Merton wrote Rain And The Rhinoceros, It was very relatable. It reminded me of how I can find peace in the woods. I close my eyes and instantly I sink into the whole rainy world of which I am a part, and the world goes on with me in it. I am alien to the noises of cities, of people, to the greed of machinery that does not sleep, the hum of the power that eats of the night.” Merton explains how he is one with nature and how he can feel so connected with it versus the city filled with things that are toxic and untrustworthy. He goes on to say how air and water is altered to make it safe for us to drink and breathe but he wants nothing to do with this type of life. “ I have no confidence in places where the air is first fouled and then cleansed, where the water is first made deadly and then made safe with other poisons.” Merton describes in his writings that rain in cities has no effect on the cities, it only brings weather to them. I think when it rains in the cities it makes everything seem dark and dreary, people get frustrated, scattering to be in a hurry to get away from this rain while their clothing, hair, paper work is getting wet.
