“How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.” (Anne Frank). Changing the world can be done by anyone at any time. This is activism, people or groups changing the world. The interesting part about activism is that it changes and adapts to become more effective. In this day and age activism has adapted to include social media. The things activist groups can do with social media are unbelievable. The focus in this paper will be on one specific group, Rainforest Action Network. The Rainforest Action Network effectively uses Twitter and Facebook to motivate and raise awareness about deforestation and other atrocities against the environment, specifically rainforests. Whether it be a photo or a paragraph RAN uses social media very effectively. Their twitter has 21.7 followers and their facebook has 359,870 likes. These are big numbers and respectable in their own right but, when you really break it down it becomes even more impressive. So 21.7 thousand people follow RAN’s twitter page which means that almost all of those people see what RAN posts. 21.7 thousand people are exposed to the things RAN posts. But, every time someone retweets something that RAN posts that person's followers see it as well. This is the power of social media, huge amounts of exposure. Facebook is similar in the fact that it gets RAN’s message huge amounts of exposure. RAN’s clever use of hashtags unite and spread the message they want to deliver. Hashtags ranging from #palmoil to #TeamRainforest. These hashtags are effective in raising awareness for the different projects that Rainforest Action Network is working on. For example the #palmoil deals with conflict palm oil across the nation. A recent post with the hashtag showed protesters in Guatemala protesting conflict palm oil. They were protesting a company called Cargill. This aids in spreading the idea that conflict palm oil is bad for the environment and also makes those that use the hashtag feel united.
