(B) The main characters from the stories “Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, “My Escape from North Korea” by Hyeonseo Lee, and “Trapped” by Aron Ralston each face life or death situations that they have to evade. Each of the characters use specific traits to help them through their journeys and situations (T) Rainsford’s quick-thinking, Hyeonseo’s perseverance, and Aron’s determination each helps them overcome the challenges that are thrown at them. (E1) “Despite having already come to accept that I will die where I stand, now I believe I will live” (Ralston 4). (A1) Thoughts of his future son make Aron determined to live and escape the cave. This is key in his survival because it is one of the main reasons that he cuts his arm off. Thoughts of never seeing his family again boosts his will to live as well. (E2) “In a blaze of pain, I know the job is just starting” (Ralston 5). (A2) He is so determined to get out of the cave that even amputating his arm is worth it. This is important to his ultimate survival because it frees him from the boulder. The fact that harming himself is worth seeing his family again shows true determination. (L) Thus, Aron Ralston’s determination enables him to survive by allowing him to focus on what is important: returning home. (Restate) Therefore, each of these people show their respective traits by using them to overcome their situations.
