In Lord of the Flies by William Golding, there has always been a battle for dominant power between two different individuals since first landing on the island. Once votes reveal that Ralph was elected Chief, there has been controversy regarding which boy would make the best national leader, Ralph or Jack. Judging by both boys records, it is clear that Ralph would make the best national leader between the two because of environmental policies, personal freedom and labor. Having supremacy over the other boys means keeping the island in best sanitation by regulating environmental policies. Ralph depicts that in order to maintain cleanliness on the island, the boys must come to agreement with main priorities are. To ensure that the policies are being obeyed, Ralph calls assemblies regularly. For example, Ralph states, “‘We have lots of assemblies. Everybody enjoys speaking and being together. We decide things...We’ve all got to use the rocks again. This place is getting dirty’” (Golding 113). In the book, Ralph states his two main priorities: keeping the fire going, and having fun while living on the island. He expects everyone to work hard, and in return, he allows for fun things, like the littluns building sand castles on the shore of the river bank. For example, the text states, “They had built castles in the sand at the bar of the little river. These castles were about one foot high and were decorated with shells, withered flowers, and interesting stones...” (Golding 83). The sand castles that the littluns built represent Ralph’s allowance to let them be kids and have a little fun. Once jobs are accomplished, Ralph allows time for socializing and personal fun.
