Recently, I read The Last Lecture and was amazed by its honest approach toward the reader, amongst many other things. The book itself is a collection of the author, Randy Pausch's various anecdotes and experiences in his time as a child, a teenager, a young adult and a professor at an esteemed university. It is essentially a written version of his "Last Lecture" talk, where he was asked to describe advice and wisdom he would give if he were to retire from professorship or he was to die. However, Pausch, unfortunately, did not have to imagine, as he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer with only a few months to live. Pausch not only states the important aspects of his life, he explains them in a relatable fashion, which effectively leads to my recommendation for the book. I would probably suggest that pessimists read this book, coming from my own experience as one. The book opened up a new perspective on the world that I had not seen before and taught me to appreciate what you have for the time being, amongst so many other things, which I truly enjoyed. After all, if a person who is going to die in six months can be optimistic, even more so than normal people can, there isn't any reason we shouldn't. I would also recommend this to people who have a close acquaintance that has cancer or some other disease or perhaps are suffering from it themselves. This book provides a truly unique outlook on those situations and addresses the truth, but not harshly. It is applicable to so many different circumstances, which is probably why I cherish it so much. Hence, by reading this book, I've learned things that I can practice at school and in life and hopefully, after reading the book others will as
