The narrator joins the Brotherhood and meets Brother Clifton. The narrator is assigned to be the main speaker for the Harlem district for the Brotherhood, and while giving a speech, he meets Ras the Exhorter-- a black nationalist. However, a woman in the crowd mistakes Ras’ name and calls him the “Extortor.” Throughout the novel, Ras is a destructive force who takes a stance with violence and intolerance to achieve liberation. The compliment that feature, Ras goes by “the exhorter,” which means someone who advises, urges, or cautions-- something a leader should have. However, an extorter is someone who takes by violence, intimidation, or abuse. This use of a pun with extorter obviously fits Ras better than Ras the Exhorter and provides humor
