President Abraham Lincoln the nation to heal as quickly as possible from the Civil War and planned to reunify the nation quickly he was assassinated in 1865 only days after Robert E. Lee’s surrender plans for Reconstruction were taken over by Vice President Andrew Johnson, who became president after Lincoln’s death
President Andrew Johnson He wanted to re unite the country for Southerners to accept black citizens as equals. His plan included amnesty for all who swore loyalty to the U.S.
 The new state constitution would have to outlaw slavery by ratifying the 13th amendment. The state would have to repudiate its depths before it could send reps to congress. During 1865-1867 most southerners approved the plan and acted quickly to establish new state governments.. However the radicles were infuriated that former confederates returned to power.
Radical Republicans They were concerned that reconstruction was not working as planned. They wanted to change reconstruction policies.
Although congress passed the reconstruction acted of 1867 president Johnson vetoed the bill. Congress overrode the veto and made it law. Impeachment charges were brought against president Johnson for being abusive of his veto power. He was found not guilty. The radicles continued to influence the reconstruction policies.
