When a person thinks of leadership many think it is just a title that an individual wear, but that is not the case. (Low, 2010) Leadership has nothing to do with a person personal characteristics or traits, but how one’s actions of leading a group or an organization for the greater good of the community in which it serves. (Turaga, 2017) Instead of looking for leaders outside my area and since the city of Memphis has two (2) law enforcement agencies, I chose to do this assignment on both the Director of the City of Memphis Police Department Michael W. Rawllings and the Shelby County Sheriff William “Bill’ Oldham. He believes in teamwork and is a strategic planner. I do understand that leader actions are often scrutinized when things are going bad, in Director Rawllings case when the city crime rate is high, but even though things seem to be bad, their leadership qualities often still shine through, even in the worst time. It is those qualities that employee under his command look up to him with respect and work hard to ensure the citizen of this great city are protected from all hurt and harm. (Cronkhite, 2013) In my personal opinion of Director Rawllings, I would say dominance behavior or an authoritative behavior is his best quality. I heard him speak with the KKK rallied here in Memphis a few months back and it was amazing how he shaped the environment by overcoming the opposition that interfered with desired results. (Cronkhite, 2013) because of his immediate actions and quick decision, the outcome of the rally was peaceful. Leadership likes his often welcome challenges and they want power and authority. As for the Shelby County Sheriff William “Bill” Oldham’s biography reading, I would say that he has more of influence behavior. He seems to be heavily involved in politics; therefore he demonstrates behaviors that are more adept at making changes by persuading others. He seems to be oriented which makings favorable impressions and general enthusiasm for others. (Cronkhite, 2013) He concentrates more on the tasks and develops systematic approaches to successfully completing them. Overall I believe both Director Rawllings and Sheriff Oldham have the excellent capabilities of motivating teams and inspiring others is the making of an effective leader. In our reading it talks about motivation is best done by example and guidance and just not words alone.
