Reader, married life seemed a peaceful and happy one. As time passed with unrelenting motion; Mr. Rochester and I kept our duties even in married life, especially with the growing of our son. I received a letter only 2 years after the completion of my last autobiography. The letter was from Diana and Mary with nothing but grave news. St. John did pass away as he expected in his last letter to me. I tell you this Reader because an event like this had never happened before, and I pondered for months why it was so troublesome to me. I asked myself, “The death of men is nothing to give away with no further emotion, but I am married to Mr. Rochester, how can I be this troubled?” These problems continued for many nights.
