To understand how the status quo differs from reality we must first understand how a family system works and is categorized and, thusly, differentiate how that system is different from imposed systems. For group to be qualified as a family it must adhere to six characteristics. The group must provide economics support. This support pertains to food, clothing, and shelter. They must provide emotional support such as love and a sense of belonging. It must involve the socialization or upbringing of children. There must be control of sexuality pertaining to marital structure as well as a control of reproduction that defines which relationships within the family will bear children. This type of family structure is most commonplace within media whereas the opposing, blended, is not. Blended is a type of framework where the family has gone through remarriages resulting in step and half siblings. The last is extended which consists of family members not directly related to you such as aunts and uncles.
