Two assigned readings on manhood opened my eyes and made it more clear why men act in such a way and how the society shapes this kind of behavior. The society tends to test men in their everyday life by looking at what they do and how they do it. As an illustration, Kimmel reveals that: “Other men watch us, rank us, grant our acceptance into the realm of manhood” (p. 4). In other words, boys from the very young age try to act and clearly demonstrate that they are manly, because they are so afraid to be viewed girly or not manly enough, they are afraid of being ashamed among other males. Unfortunately, men, as well as women, are vulnerable to the perception that the society holds about them. 1). However, she argues that not only men promote patriarchal behavior in the society, but women as well: “Women can be as wedded to patriarchal thinking and action as men” (p. 2). Additionally, what really stood out in Kimmel’s article for me is that he acknowledges how much power the society assigns to men but how little power they have in reality. By realizing this fact, as a consequence “men are frustrated and angry” (p. 218). This leads to violent or insulting ways by which men aim to prove that they do have power: they become “discriminating on the basis of race, class, ethnicity, age, or sexual preference” (p.
