First of all, a parent or guardian would have reasons why their child should not be in a relationship with somebody. One reason why a parent might say that is because, they think their child's center of attention should be on their career. On the website called "www.theguardian.com" it says, "you can marry any man you want – as long as he’s Sikh.” This warning was issued to me and my sister, by our parents, at an early age. So, Priya Basil could marry any man that was Sikh and only Sikh. In the story Romeo and Juliet the reason why they could not get married was because of family gruges that prohibited them to be together.
