The majority of the Houston’s homeless are not who we always see on the streets. Most of the homeless are hidden living with others, in abandon buildings, in parks, cars or in shelters. How many times have you passed by people sitting on the street, with a cart carrying their belongings or a small cardboard box asking for spare change? Have you ever noticed the amounts of people who have neither home nor a job to maintain themselves? You may think it is their own fault for letting themselves go or you might think if they wanted, they would have it all. “Get a job” is a regular phrase homeless people hear. Homelessness can be caused by many things, such as unemployment, relationship problems, mental illness, natural disasters or being evicted from home by a friend or even a family member. However, with every cause there must be an effect. Some of the effects of one becoming homeless, besides the obvious change of lifestyle, some are various health problems which often times may lead to death, abuse at home, drug/ alcohol abuse. Based off of Dara it is statically believed that about 38% of homeless people abuse alcohol while 26% regularly use other drugs.
For the homeless people who live in the streets are exposed to the most severe conditions. Harsh weather conditions can cause the people to become ill or it may even lead to killing them. The homeless in the streets tend to get ignored which leaves them with metal or medical health problems being left untreated. Most commonly they become at risk for developing nutritional deficiencies that can lead to health problems such as dyslexia and starvation. Also the homeless are more likely to become a victim of crime. With having such limited amount of resources they are less likely to keep themselves
