Rebecca Walker was a feminist, who fought for woman’s Rights and much more. Being the daughter of a famous Pulitzer Prize Winning Author and a Jewish Civil Rights attorney brought Ms. Walker to view life from the perspective of many different backgrounds. Being a woman, of mixed race and diverse backgrounds became the inspiration for her life work as she both celebrated and disparaged the pro and cons of her existence of ethnic and religious diversities. Having read Ms. Walker’s description of her birth, was a great pleasure for me, as it allowed me to view this natural and everyday occurrence from the perspective of a woman, under very harsh living circumstances and social pressure. For this exercise, I interviewed my mother about my birth and it is very easy to see that the circumstances of my arrival on Earth, and the situation at the time for my mother, had many similarities to the story with which Rebecca Walker speaks of her birth.

It would be two weeks before I could go home and my mother remained sick for months after the pregnancy and birth. I never knew any of these details before interviewing my Mother for this essay. I feel great pride in my mother and her ability to endure, but also a great sadness for having put her through such a difficult time. This experience has given me a much greater appreciation of woman and the sacrifices they make for the sake of bring their child a life.
