After the Civil war the United States had the task to integrate a formerly slave population and a formerly rebellious population back into the country, this was to be the main focus of the policy of Reconstruction. It is still debated whether Reconstruction really achieved the aim of integrating the former African American slaves successfully as free men in American society. Over the course of the next twelve years former slaves will be given the task of trying to assimilate into the land they once worked as legal property. Although now free, the Reconstruction period would determine whether African Americans would be seen as equal to their former masters.
