A.) The question is important to the time period because it shows how reconstruction efforts after the civil war led to an important time in history. Overall it simply reveals how an earlier event helped influence future actions leading to the civil rights movement.

During this time the civil war had ended and the Union was claimed the winner. The North was looking for a way to remake the South so they could assimilate back into the Union. So the 15th amendment (Document A) is used to declare voting a right for all people regardless of race. This is because the amendment strengthened the beliefs of those who supported civil rights for African Americans. In an illustration by Thomas Nast he showed the damage and dismay the KKK brought to African Americans who lived in the South. It revealed the resistance to the changing social and racial status to those in the South. This was depicted using the death of a son and the lynching of an African American providing the conclusion that all of this was done by the KKK. However, the Freedman’s Bureau had been working to ensure the Civil Rights of Freedmen in the South during the reconstruction movement. The Louisiana Constitution of 1864 showed better standards of rights for African Americans. This allowed for better educational opportunities to African Americans to be attainable in the South. The document was mostly influenced by Democrats in the North as they stepped in by changing the government and, in turn, the social status of the south. People began to move towards the South in hopes of economic gain. This is meant to show that Northerners were attempting to profit from the destruction of the South.
