Comparing and Contrasting: The Red Badge of Courage and Soldier’s Heart

While reading The Red Badge of Courage and Soldiers Heart, the reader can’t help but to think that the two books are suspiciously alike in many ways. One may even hint that they are the same book. These two novels are alike in many ways, but differ in some. In the novella’s The Red Badge of Courage and Soldier’s Heart, the reader will come to see that every soldier is affected in different ways, but they all have one thing in common: They will never come out the same person they went in as. The main character’s in these novella’s are slightly different in terms of age, maturity and bravery. As one struggles with his cowardice, the other struggles to un-see the many barbarous things in his short time of being in the war. In these novella’s, the main character’s, Henry and Charlie are different, but go through and see many of the same things. Henry and Charlie both watch as their comrades fall to their deaths, and experience the harsh brutality of war. Neither of these men have any idea of what they are really getting into. Although anxious for their time to come to fight, neither are ready for what is in store for them. Both men talk with the enemy as if they are neighbors, knowing that the next day they would be shooting at one another, possibly killing one another. Neither of these two men are ready for what they’re going to get, then again, no one there is ready. Both of these young men lose a major part of themselves, these men witness harsh acts, countless deaths and many sad nights wishing they could just go home and forget all that they have seen.
