A major event that happens in this section is when Sergeant Parks interrupts the class and demonstrates to Miss Justineau that the children are dangerous by putting his arm in front of Kenny’s face. This causes Kenny to start snapping at the arm and start producing solid drool from his mouth. It has the same effect on the children around him. This is significant to note because it is the first explicit piece of evidence that these children probably have zombie-like characteristics. Before this, they did seem a little outlandish (i.e. they ate worms and had to be strapped down in wheelchairs), however readers weren’t given any hints as to why they had to be treated this way or what was wrong with them, if there was anything wrong with them in the first place. I also like how sometimes the chapters are from different points of view, not just Melanie’s (such as chapter 4 when the focus was on Miss Justineau and chapter 8 when the focus was on Dr. Caldwell). It facilitates character development and gives the readers a glimpse at what’s actually going on. For example, in chapter 8 we learn that Dr. Caldwell removes the brains of the children she takes away, which is a fact we wouldn’t have been able to discover if the whole thing was told following Melanie. It’s interesting how the book is told in 3rd person, but it feels like 1st person because the narrator only zeros in on one character’s thoughts and feelings at
