Reflection on the common reader “Enrique’s Journey”
The events of Enrique’s Journey takes us through the venture of a boy experiencing both the best and worst that humanity has to offer. From constant rejection in the many homes he had to live in to the most vicious of beatings and deportation back to his home country. To the kindest hearts willing to help him in his time of need, feed him and even give up what little they had.
The most impactful moments would be how the locals treated the migrants. Enrique is coming from a place where even his family rejected him slowly moving north even the towns he passed through treated Enrique with distain (Nazario, 2014, pp. 45-101). Once Enrique moved passed southern Mexico things started to change for the better. The more towns he passed through the more the locals from the surrounding areas treated migrants with respect. Several churches and even local people would open their doors and let migrants stay for weeks at a time (Nazario, 2014, p. 111). This change in attitude from Enrique’s perspective must have been something new and enthralling, to go from constant rejection to locals offering an open hand.…show more content… 103). A Doctors without Borders station sits close to the tracks known for “providing humanitarian assistance, including mental assistance to migrants” (Surinyach, 2014). Plenty of people loiter under trees near the tracks surrounded by trash and wild dogs seemingly waiting for the next train to arrive.
