Reflection On The Walk The Talk At Skid Row

The community event I attended was the “Walk the Talk” at Skid Row. The purpose of the parade was to celebrate and honor the heroes of Skid Row who have been advocating for the rights of the homeless throughout the years. Throughout the parade, 8 individuals were honored at different stops for 10 minutes, including the CEO of the Union Rescue Mission. When I arrived, it was difficult for me to find the starting point of the parade because they started at a different location. When I met with the group it was nice to see that everyone was having a great time and the music really caught my attention. When I saw the group, I did not know who all the heroes were, but I was definitely able to recognize Andy Bales from the URM right when I saw him. …show more content…
It was nice to see up close how humble and caring these individuals really are. At each stop or location, there will be a performance and a story of each honoree at the site they’ve identified as important to them. Many of the heroes are founders of human service agencies in Skid Row. What I thought was the common theme for everyone was how collaboration is important to make a change in the world. If one person can influence a group of people, then power can be established to bring about changes in problems. They emphasized the importance of being mindful of the struggles that homeless people go through and do our best to provide support. I agree with what the speakers were saying because society is ignoring the homeless population and no effective changes are happening to address this problem. The Skid Row population continues to increase, and younger people are becoming homeless. It was amazing to see how much support and motivation these heroes have to address
