Reflections in the Mirror Early Childhood Specialists theorize that from early childhood to adolescence children become expert mimics. Mary was enrolled in college, but was forced to quit when her grant was terminated. Wes’ father (Bernard) suffered from alcoholism and never became a part of his son’s life. Toward the relationships end Mary grew tired of Bernard’s drinking and moved out of the home. After the move Bernard tried to see his son only once. (24). Wes is largely influenced and molded by his brother Tony. Tony wants the best for his younger brother, but can’t give Wes what he needs. Essentially, Wes and Tony’s existence are on the level of one child attempting to raise another child. Wes’ mother works long hours and is often away from home. Both boys are exposed to a string of their mother’s boyfriends. However, none of these men forge any kind of relationship with either child. Tony, subsequently, learns and adopts a street hustler’s mentality. Tony identifies with street hustlers because these are the people that surround him.
