Before beginning English 101, I expected the worst; hearing the complaints from former students about how difficult the course and their professors were. Many said that the professors assigned too much work to the point where it seems impossible to complete. People would tell me how they had a five-page paper essay due, and I wonder how I could ever manage that; I can barely generate a two-page document with correct grammar and punctuation. My first thought was, will the papers I produced be good enough for my professor and will I be able to pass this class with a B or better. I never use to start with a rough draft before this class. I usually use to think about the ideas in my head and write them down in bullets. My writing use to be all over the place, and I even confused myself. With the help of Mrs. Welch, I learn to create MLA outlines before starting my essays, and I must say that was a huge assist. An organized outline to follow is better than a bunch of unorganized sentences. Additionally, I got a chance to get familiar with citations. My high school never actually required us to work with them so this was a difficult but new experience. For the most part, being in English 101 has improved my writing. I still struggle with punctuation and grammar, but growth is a continuous effort and struggle that takes time. Being required to compose about five essays allowed me to work really on the skills I lack. Even though I made some improvements, I still know that I have a lot more improving to do, but what I learned from this class will most certainly aid me with my writing future papers in other classes.
