It’s 9:45AM on a friday. The kids are scrambling to find their instruments, set up their music stands and prepare for class. David Powelson, the new Jazz teacher, walks in and sits at his desk. Everyone is at their seats waiting patiently for David’s next move.

“What is the difference between practice and rehearsal?” Asks David. “Practise is done by yourself. Rehearsal is where you come together and put all of your work into making the music.”

“I think that it’s driven more by them than it is me.” says David. He describes the culture of his classroom as “(...) Very independent and I think all the students want to be there. I think that it’s all very important to them and they put effort and time into making it good.”
