Literature Review
Relational Dialects theory shows between two persons when communicating verbabaly, non-verbally. It can also be shown through writings or given in speech form. Through relational dialectics, people are able to inform one another of their own personal approach to communication. This includes people’s perspectives, morals, worldview and own thought processes when it comes to communication. Although there is a lot of room for communication to happen, there can be a lot of room for miscommunication between two people. There is a tension that can come from personal perspectives that affect relational communication, habits and intimacy within relationships. Whites were given the opportunity to become friends with a White or Black participant. Whites indicated how interested they were in becoming friends and how concerned they were about being rejected as a friend. They also indicated how interested they thought the other person was in becoming friends and how concerned they thought the other person was about being rejected as friend. Results revealed that lower-prejudice Whites made divergent explanations for the self and other when the potential friend was Black, whereas higher-prejudice Whites did not.
