Research in motivation and emotion can be conducted in various manners. In motivation, experimental and correlational research can be done. Experimental research is usually performed in a laboratory and involves the manipulation of a motivational variable to determine the effects on any behaviors which indicate motivation. Correlational research is different because it does not involve the manipulations of a variable. It entails the measuring of an existing motivational variable to determine how the measured values are associated with behavioral indicator of motivation. In motivation, the experimental variable is the one that is manipulated by the experimenter to create different levels or values. The participants are randomly assigned to conditions representing the levels on this variable. The correlational variable contains levels that are measured but not created by the experimenter. The participants represent different levels on the correlational variable. In the case of experimental research, the dependent variable refers to behavior that depends on the experimental variable. It is associated with the …show more content…
One group had a high need to achieve while the other group has a low need to achieve. The participants were all evaluated earlier for their need to achieve. The experimental variable was assigned randomly to receive the reward of either $1 or $5. The correlational variable had different participants selected to represent the high and low need to achieve groups. The dependent variable showed how the behavior differed among the participants by showing how many seconds a participant persisted in trying to solve the anagram before giving up. Those that were to receive the reward of $5 persisted longer than those that only were to receive
