While Ahab gains power through the psychological efforts of charisma, he expresses the actions of a tyrannical leader to preserve his status as a leader. The Encyclopedia of Leadership claims that to be a tyrannical leader one must have “these three qualities—grandiosity, ruthlessness, and insecurity” (Goethels …). Ahab expresses all three qualities in the context of the novel. Ahab represents the trait of ruthlessness when he physically threatens the crew. An example of this behavior is in his encounter with Starbuck in “Ahab and Starbuck” (Melville 516-518). At this point in the novel, Melville constructs Starbuck to serve as a voice of reason for Ahab. He expresses concern for the crew, the ship, the economic aspect of the Pequod voyage
