Ikemefuna may be from the Mbaino tribe, but he is hard working, dedicated, and becomes loyal to Okonkwo’s family. Ezinma is one of Okonkwo’s real kids and may have been a girl, but she also works hard and has determination. Ikemefuna (Ike) is brought into the story when he is fifteen years old. He becomes Okonkwo’s adopted son. Okonkwo hopes Ike will rub off on Nwoye, Okonkwo’s real son. Ezinma wants to do all the jobs of a boy her age. Okonkwo wishes she had been born a boy. Ike and Ezinma are both Okonkwo’s favorite kid. Ike is Okonkwo’s favorite boy because he wants Ike’s dedication and hard work to rub off on Nwoye. He was given as a sacrifice from the Mbaino people for killing an Umuofian woman. Ezinma is from Umuofia. She is Okonkwo’s first and oldest daughter. She was raised by Okonkwo, while Ike was raised by the Mbaino until he was fifteen. Ike and Ezinma have very different lives, especially because Ike is murdered by the Umuofian elders and Okonkwo. After three years, the tribe elders decide Ike must be killed. This is after he has already grown close to Okonkwo’s family. Okonkwo still delivers the fatal blow after the tribe guards beat Ike. He does this because he does not want to be seen as weak. He immediately regrets his decision and it haunts him for life. Ezinma grows up to live with her father throughout his exile, life in Mbanta, and return to Umuofia when she got married. In this return Okonkwo committed suicide due to Missionaries taking over. Ezinma lives a full life. The third difference and obvious difference is their gender, but gender determines their roles in society. Ezinma does not take the role of a woman fully. She acts like a woman, but works like a man. Also, she is respected for this. Ike on the other hand fully accepts his role in society, working in the fields like a regular man should.
