Why do people make commitments? Commitments are made through certain human needs like the need for love or acceptance. In William Shakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, the human need to make a commitment is illustrated through certain characters. Through these characters we see three different human needs to make a commitment through Juliet, Romeo, and Friar Lawrence. Juliet’s commitment to Romeo demonstrates the human need for undying and unconditional love. She makes a commitment to be with him because she is in love with him and hopes to share this commitment. By doing this is put’s her relationship with her parents, who are very important to her, on the line. She doesn’t just risk the most important relationships to her to be in this commitment but also risks death. She risks this to stay committed to him, since she feared that the potion Friar Lawrence gave her would kill her. The streets were full of bad blood and quarrel because of the families an Friar Lawrence saw the opportunity to stop this by marrying Romeo and Juliet. If the two star-crossed lovers it would be a sign of the two families joining together in peace, and it would end the fighting. With the quarreling families at peace, Verona would be a safer and happier place. Friar Lawrence dedicated himself to go behind the Prince’s back as well as the head Montague’s and Capulet’s backs just to accomplish this. People need peace in their lives so they can feel safe and content. Even the Prince was fed up with all this fighting but he only offered a severe penalty, whereas Friar Lawrence saw an opportunity for peace and acted upon it.
