The storyline of The Alchemist, written by Paulo Coelho, is about so much more than a stereotypical boy following his dreams of wealth, success, and fortune; the real meaning behind the story is much more complicated than that. The Alchemist tells about a boy, named Santiago, who is on a quest to find his true purpose. Throughout the process of traveling and adventuring all around the world, Santiago begins to unveil the true and unfiltered relationship that exists between humans and animals. Santiago’s small adventure to a different country turns into a life-changing movement with the objective of discovering the raw truths of life, one of which concerns how the relationship between humans and animals is illustrated and what that relationship entails for each party involved. …show more content…
The role that animals play in relation to humans is very distinct in the novel, The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho. Coelho emphasis a mutual relationship between humans and animals where both sides receive positive repercussions in exchange for help and guidance. Humans offer animals food, water, and shelter, whereas animals offer humans guidance and transportation, among others. One clear example that is present in The Alchemist is the unique relationship between Santiago and his sheep. The relationship between Santiago and his sheep is one that expresses a mutual understanding of the personal roles of each party involved. Santiago herds his flock throughout his homeland, leading the sheep to what they care most about, food and water. However, for Santiago, their relationship is much more than strictly a business transaction. Not only does Santiago use the sheep for transportation and to support himself financially, but he also looks to the sheep for guidance.
