For my “This I Believe” essay I chose the topic of family relationships. In my opinion, family relationships are one of the utmost critical and important aspects of someone’s life. A family relationship is the relatedness or connection by blood or marriage/adoption. Family relationships are one of the utmost substantial themes in the play, “Fences.” The relationship someone has with a family member can unquestionably shape them into the person that they are and it can also affect or change the way they act in their everyday life. Family relationships are the main theme of the play, “Fences.” In this play, the protagonist, Troy Maxson, struggles with his role as a father and a husband. Troy cannot accept that time has changed, and he wants to strictly believe what he believed while he was growing up. Troy believed that blacks would never be able to get the privilege that white men do. In the play, Troy refused to let his son, Cory, play football because he felt that there would still be racial prejudice much like while he was growing up. This caused him to believe that his son would never actually be able to ever play any of the games, resulting in the refusal to sign to let Cory play football. This caused Cory to get unquestionably indignant. The main conflict in this play was the fact that Cory was not allowed to play football due to his father’s beliefs in society. Cory and Troy both were unquestionably heated and furious at each other which caused a great deal of tension to arise. This resulted in Troy kicking his son Cory out of the house because
