In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, Janie goes through three different marriages. At the start of the book Janie is alone, however every man lusts after her for the wrong reasons. The novel is not about her quest to find a partner but instead a quest for independence and to be loved the way she wants to be loved. The kind of love that is characterized by the marriage between a bee and a blossom on a pear tree that was in Nanny's backyard. Janie’s relationships with her marriages affect her “quest” of finding her ideal love and independence.

He comes to Eatonville as a fun-loving man who quickly falls for Janie. Janie flourishes in her relationship with Tea Cake. She believes that he has pure intentions, even with people who she is close with telling her otherwise. They believe that Tea Cake is too young and that she cannot be allowed to fall in love with him. Janie adores him and he adores her. After moving to the Everglades with Tea Cake she embraces her new life. Janie has finally found the love like the bee and its blossom. Janie’s quest for love leads her along different paths. She gains strength from the protective love from Nanny and Logan as well as the possessive love of Joe. Janie finds her desired type of love with Tea Cake. Throughout the novel she gains strength and independence from the relationships she had. Through her marriages Janie was able to find her self-independence and find the type of love she always wanted. Her “quest” to find love has finally been completed until it was suddenly ripped away from her hands by a series of unfortunate
