Religion is an extremely important part of Pi Patel’s life, it is also one of the most controversial and interesting aspects of The Life of Pi. Him having three religions- Catholicism, Islam, and Hinduism- sparked disbelief in droves of people, both in the story and in the real world. After being confronted by the three religious leaders of his respective religions, all at the same time, Pi is asked why he chooses to practice these three conflicting, yet similar, religions. He replied with, “I just want to love God”(87). The religious leaders and Pi’s parents simply brushed the situation off and continued on with their day, because who were they to tell a boy he couldn’t love God? Their skepticism is well founded.
