On Tuesday, August 27, 1776, General William Howe landed on Brooklyn Heights with British Troops and German Hessian mercenaries, killing 300 American troops, wounding 800, and capturing 1000. This barbarous violence by the British is known as the Battle of Long Island, or the Battle of Brooklyn Heights, where 10000 brave, young, helpless and inexperienced American Troops were pitted against 20000 bloody savages known as the British, along with the ruthless, murderous Hessians who bayoneted many young Patriots to death. This has not been the first time the British have struck down the colonists with tremendous violence.Remember the Battle of Bunker Hill? Due to these events and other events that have hurt the Americans, many can concur that the British are truly tyrants that exercise their power with brutality. One example of British ruthlessness was when like mentioned above, they ferociously took over New York by capturing any who resisted their control in the Battle of Long Island. The Massacre was a street fight that occurred between the British and a group of Patriot protesters who threw sticks, stones, and snowballs. There were many reasons why the mob was protesting. One man was reported to be protesting because one of the British guards in the Massacre didn’t pay for a wig he made. However, many patriots were protesting because of the presence of British Troops in Boston. The Massacre started when British soldiers started firing into the mob. The shots killed 3 protesters instantly and wounded 8 other protesters. Even though the Patriot mob was throwing rocks, sticks, and snowballs, using gunfire was obviously not the answer, as gunfire does not help calm a mob down and raises eyebrows about proper security in the colonies.
