The Renaissance was a titanic explosion of creativity that spread throughout Europe from 1300 to 1600, with its origins beginning in the boot-shaped country of Italy! It has painted, written, sculpted and politically spoken itself into a 400 year period timespan of history! During the Renaissance, artists, writers, sculptors and speakers such as William Shakespeare, Leonardo Da Vinci, Albrecht Dürer, Raphael, Donatello, Thomas More, Donatello and others came into the light, to spread knowledge that probably was more than Socrates had ever known to his wise brain! This is the most famous of the series. He published the series in 1498 and became wealthy and famous across Europe. He became so wealthy that he could afford to work on his own without having to beg rich people for money.8 The Four Horsemen Of The Apocalypse depicts a prophecy of what will happen to non believers. There are four horsemen: White represents judgement, Red represents war, Black represents natural disaster and the Pale horse represents death.9

Durer painted many self-portraits and this was his third. It was painted with oil paint on Linden wood. The portrait abandoned the traditional Renaissance style that artists traditionally used, which glamorized their subjects in a religious setting and in profile. There was usually a scenic background and/or something of interest in hand or in the background. Instead, he aimed for a head-on view with no religious background or setting.
