In Meditations on First Philosophy, Rene Descartes gives arguments for the existence of God. In one of Descartes’ versions of the ontological argument, he tries to prove God exists in four premises. I will summarize then criticize Descartes’ argument.
Descartes says in premise one that the cause of an idea must have at least as much formal reality as the idea has objective reality. Premise two says that something cannot come from nothing. In premise three, Descartes says he has an idea of God as the most perfect being, having infinite objective reality.
