Obviously the issue of teen pregnancy and STI contraction is no secret and these numbers, though shocking and depressing, makes a lot of sense. The reproductive health conference I was able to attend in October was a fantastic experience and gave me pretty much all the information I needed to complete this assignment. There have been so many changes already implemented in Illinois. The project was great and interesting and I feel that I gained a lot of really important information. I think admitting that this was a problem was the first step and now the community leaders are on the right track with trying to get other community members and leaders to take notice and get involved.
It will always be important, when working in the healthcare field to know the risk factors of every age group, to ensure that they are properly educated, to decrease reoccurrences and make sure that they are prepared to take care of themselves when they leave the hospital. The information I learned throughout this experience is also beneficial since community nursing and outpatient care will soon be utilized more than inpatient hospital stints. I was really lucky to have had that observational experience from my Peds clinical because it connected me with Linda and an organization within Manual Academy that I had no idea existed. I made a really good impression on her the first time I went, she even mentioned me to a few other students who had the clinic as an off-site. So with this assignment, I was very fortunate to have the clinical experiences that I had through this school because I have no idea how I would have been able to connect with a preceptor. I would never have even known that the number of pregnancies and STI’s in that area of Peoria were so
