My mother had just returned from the hospital and her face told me everything. “Your baby cousin has cancer”, she whispered and burst into tears. I couldn’t process what she told me, could a four-year old have cancer? I didn’t know whether to tend to my speechlessness or to comfort my mother. I went to visit him in the hospital only to find a room of tragedy; an anemic baby sleeping on the bed and teary parents. I almost didn’t recognize the boy, I couldn’t see the boy who was healthy and ran around the whole house and blabbered about being an army officer and protecting the world when he grows up.
It was a last stage cancer and he was living through a machine until a week later, his heart finally gave up. The boy wanted to protect the world but the world couldn’t protect him from the inevitable.
Every day, I wished the doctors could find a solution; I wished there was a cure for cancer. Soon, I knew I was interested in a field of research and medicine.…show more content… There used to be a time when deadly diseases such as smallpox, yellow fever and influenza killed millions. What might have seemed impossible to survive then is now almost eradicated with introduction of vaccines. The lives that were on the brink of death were saved by research. I want to be a part of this research experience because it’s not just about learning the subject but also learning a lot about ourselves. I believe research helps us to expand our boundaries, keep working hard to reach our goal and learn something new about the world around us. It is research that helps one take a step forward towards something
