Operationalization: The present study, a content analysis, seeks to analyze curse words use in popular films The King’s Speech and Argo. Both films were viewed in their entirety by coders who noted curse word use by any character and the characteristics of the character engaged in such use. The unit of analysis for this study is the individual characters of the films. Each character that was heard using a curse word is coded to determine the categories of the independent variables to which they belonged. These independent variables were the sex of the character. Sex is conceptualized as which whether one is male and female. Sex was operationalized by coders using both physical (hair length and styling, body type, features and shape, etc.,) and cultural (style and type of dress, names, and gender of pronouns used to refer to the character, etc.,) characteristics to classify the characters into the categories of male or female. The dependent variable for this study is use of curse words, which is conceptualized: Offensive words were classified into one of five groups: the seven dirty words, sexual words, excretory words, mild other words, and strong other words.
